In the words of Dr. King, "Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty we are free at last!"

I am so glad Barack Hussein Obama actually won the presidency, and I am alive to see this day. I can hear people blaring their horns, and this is in Canada. I can only imagine how people are celebrating in the States. His story is definitely one of resilience and hard work. People around the world were rooting for this guy, and that alone is a strong sign of leadership.

"Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them." (Shakespeare, Twelfth Night)

Congratulations Mr. President, you are an inspiration to all of us. God Bless America! =).

I'm really struggling to understand where all this enthusiasm has come from. Optimism is one thing but the hype around Obama winning... It's all a bit creepy to be honest.

All of a sudden people think they know Obama personally, or that him winning will have some kind of profound effect on the world. You're all setting yourselves up for disappointment imo!

I agree with you. I mean there's no way he would be able to keep up with all of his promises, or bring about the much promised change overnight. But, I think people are excited, because we all expected the worst, thanks to the 2000 and 2004 elections. Even I thought something would go wrong, and McCain would get elected.

Obama did play it safe toward the end, and there is no gurantees here, because a lot is riding on him. But if an African American (albeit he's half white) could get elected anything can happen right?

He was an underdog, and did an excellent job managing his campaign. He had everything going against him but he somehow got people to hope again.

I read this article in the Time Magazine, which pointed out that McCain's defeat has a lot to do with Bush, and less to do with his own campaign management. Furthermore, the 8 years of Bush administration made it easier for Obama to win.

In the words of my black friend's facebook update: "no more 'it's cuz im black' lol... yehhhhh OBAMA.. change is here."

See the change is already here :).

But surely that's the point? McCain lost more than Obama won. I reckon even a woman could have been voted in after Bush tbh :)

But a woman (Clinton or Palin) didn't get voted in after Bush.

I agree, this sense of relief and joy that everyone is feeling right now is irrational. But, Obama ran an excellent campaign. He showed immense respect for his opponent, be it Hillary or McCain. When the other side was getting downright dirty, he remained chivalrous.

Maybe all this hope is not such a bad idea. We all deserve a break, while not succumbing to Obamamania(something you pointed out). It would be hard to fix the world's problems in 4 years but he's willing to talk to the world leaders, and that's a good start.

Obama got people excited about politics and that is something we can't take away from him.

Other than health care, his platform is not as clear-cut as one would have hoped.

I prefer to think that he got away with his underhandedness. But then I am a cynic.

I sincerely hop that I'm proven wrong :)
